I've received emails and facebook comments on if I make and sell the rulers...
1. Do I take orders?
I will make you a growth chart for $50. Because it is hand-stained and hand-stenciled, it will have slightly different knots and staining, but it will very much resemble my ruler. Shipping charges will vary depending on where you live, but I can check on pricing for you.
Email me at benandtiffany@gmail.com. Include your zipcode and I'll be happy to check on shipping for you. UPS direct offers the most competitive prices for boards (typically $35-$40) and usually delivers within 3-4 days.
Thanks!
I'm so excited about my Pottery Barn knock-off ruler growth chart!!
It's a great way to keep up with your child's height and looks good enough to display in the main part of your house (versus hiding it in your kid's bedroom).
I put mine in the hallway off of my kitchen.
I first stained my 1x8x6 piece of wood and made stencils for the lines and numbers. I made the "quarter" lines 2 inches long and the "eighth" lines 1 inch long. I drew in all of the lines and numbers first with a pencil and then came back with a permanent marker.
(Not a difficult process, but a little tedious.)
(Not a difficult process, but a little tedious.)
I wanted to hang my ruler (as opposed to leaning it), and since I have tall baseboards, I started my marks at 6 inches. So my ruler actually measures up to 6 1/2 feet tall.
My kids were confused/excited/proud of their new ruler the minute I hung it up. If Davis could talk he would say (like my husband did), "Why is there a ruler hanging on the wall?) |
Sweet Sydney gets excited over just about anything.
And Addi can now prove that she's the big sister.
Man I love these kids!! When I have a chance, I plan to go back to their growth charts to mark down their heights up until now. And the best part about the ruler is that it's portable..from this wall to another wall or from this house to another house. Thanks to 517 Creations for sharing your idea!
Wonderful project. Pinned for furture reference! Love your baseboards by the way.
ReplyDeleteHello! I would like to inquire about ordering the baseball scoreboard but I can't locate contact info on the blog. My page is blank when I click "contact" - can you provide me with a current email address? THANKS!
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole,
DeleteYou can email me at lindzut@yahoo.com. Sorry the page was blank... we had our blog redone and haven't gotten around to filling in all the blank spaces.
Lindsay
Hi!
ReplyDeleteI love this and I love the color paint that is on your walls. Can you tell me what that color is and who it is made by?
Thank you!
Theresa
Hi Theresa
ReplyDeleteThe wall color is Golden Ecru by Pittsburgh Paint.
Thanks :)
Tiffany
Hi Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteI know you posted the blog about the ruler last month, but are you still offering to make them? I would love to purchase one if they are still available. Thank you so much in advnace for your reply!
Hi Stacie,
DeleteI'd love to make you a ruler. Email me your zipcode at benandtiffany@gmail.com, and I can check on shipping for you.
Thanks!
Tiffany
Your growth chart turned out beautifully! Thanks for the link back! :)
ReplyDeletehow did you attach it to the wall? i'm making one this weekend and don't want to lean mine either. thanks!
ReplyDeleteI had the same problem: mounting. Ended up using 1 1/2" screws with those plastic braces: not ideal because I rent but whatever I NEEEDED to hang this. I had wanted gold angle brackets but got impatient looking for them.
DeleteThese might work for you: http://www.amazon.com/SUPER-STRUT-AB204-Angle-Bracket-Holes/dp/B007DZRMWY/ref=sr_1_18?s=hardware&ie=UTF8&qid=1339694711&sr=1-18&keywords=gold+brackets
Would still have to use screws, though.
Hi Leslie,
DeleteI use two 1" nailless sawtooth hangers. Good luck!
Tiffany
I totally did this; thanks for the inspiration! I added my kid's name and birthday and it looks very cute. Cute enough for the living room, even, which is high praise indeed.

I did this years ago, my kids are now 23 and 27. All their friends heights are on there too. They always look to see how little they were.
ReplyDeleteIt's the best!
I love this ruler! I too, have admired it at Pottery Barn. What color stain did you use? We are definitely going to make this! :)
ReplyDeleteI am curious as to how you will record your kids' ages on the ruler - what color, how you'll put it on the ruler - vinyl, marker? etc. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this! What size font on the numbers?
ReplyDeleteAre the numbers and 1" and 2" markers rub-ons? How do you attach them to the ruler?
ReplyDeleteI use a black pen (a cheap one, not ball point), to record the date and height of my kids. You could use a permanent marker or a paint pen, but i didn't want to "crowd" up the board with all of the markings. So from further back, all you see is the ruler :)
ReplyDeleteThe numbers are Century font. 72pt
The numbers and dashes are stencils. So you would use them to trace with a marker onto your board. Sorry for the confusion. You're not the first to ask. I've changed my wording to better explain in the top post.
Love this! Working on mine today. Can u let me know how thick the dashes are?
ReplyDeleteHi Tiffany, I love your board! It turned out great, and really looks like a big oversized ruler. I think the varying dash lengths and the number size/font/placement makes it looks so authentic. Great job!! I'm interested in maybe ordering the stencil, but I'm curious... what kind of paper is it, and will I have to cut out the dashes and numbers before I can use it, or is it pre-cut? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteHi again! Sorry, it was late when I commented last night... I just came back to re-read your post, and I see that you did say the stencils would be cut out. :)
DeleteHi, I have the MinWax Polyshades stain. It's one-step stain (i.e. stain with polyurethane in one). Would I still be able to mark the numbers and dashes on it AFTER applying the stain??? What did you use?
ReplyDeleteHi! I am interested in ordering the actual full size ruler. How would I go about ordering? I would pay for the supplies and whatever you needed. I haven't seen one like yours online, and I think its beautiful. Please email me with the purchasing process.
ReplyDeleteKind Regards,
Katie

ReplyDeleteYours is my favorite of all the DIY ruler growth charts online. What color stain did you use? And what kind of wood?
ReplyDeleteGreat job! & Thank you!
Thanks so much for the awesome idea!! I made my own, and got decals made for the numbers, cost me $15 and they do not seem at all like they will peel off.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this idea! I am excited to say I finally finished and hung mine. I blogged about it here http://www.mylittlesomethingsweet.com/2014/03/07/our-growth-chart/
